OUR STORY

More than just an allotment...

The allotments were formed in 1957. Boston Borough purchased the land from a joiner who owned the land as there was a growing need for allotments around the town. The fee at the time was £1575.10 shillings. The site was run by the council until 2013 when the allotment association was formed. Since the formation the allotments have grown into being a more community based site, regularly seeing nurseries, schools and community groups attend the site to learn about growing vegetables herbs and flowers. Over the last few years we have received significant funding including £15000 from Arts Council England to run arts project, to £107,275 from the National Lottery which is spread across five years to run community based projects under The Edible Academy. The funding received has enabled us to install a building compromising a disabled toilet, there is also a cafe on site, which means we can attract families to spend longer times on the plots as well as visitors who wish to use our amenities.

Secretary

Jane Kay

Jane took over her plot, along with her sister in 2013, following the sudden loss of her sisters husband, Robert. Jane says "it was an honour to work the plot in his memory and gave us solace as we listened to the birds while we worked the earth and watched things grow."

Jane took over the role of secretary from her sister to help keep the allotments moving in the right direction. "There have been a lot of changes over the years, but it is a place that I love to be."
